WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC AND A CHIROPRACTOR?
A chiropractor is a national board certified and state licensed doctor of chiropractic with a four year undergraduate degree and four additional years of study in a doctor of chiropractic program. Chiropractors specialize in skeletal and muscle related disorders. Chiropractic by definition is the science, art, and philosophy of primarily the spine, but also of other joints and soft tissue (muscle, organs, glands, tendons, ligaments, and fascia), and their relationship to the nervous system.
When a spinal vertebra becomes out of alignment, relative to the vertebra above and below, it is termed a subluxation. A subluxation may only need to be a matter of millimeters to cause irritation to and impede nervous system flow or communication both from the brain to every muscle, organ, tissue, and cell in the body and also the nervous system communication from such back to the brain. An acute subluxation typically results in pain, muscle spasm, and often times numbness and tingling in areas of the body that the particular nerve travels to communicate and control function throughout the body. It’s not uncommon to experience decreased range of motion, loss of flexibility, and inability to perform normal functions.
A chronic subluxation, which if left untreated over time, will eventually result in further loss of motion, loss of flexibility, muscle weakness, and diminished function with a decreased ability to perform activities of daily living, as areas of the spine above and below the subluxation attempt to stabilize the situation. At this point we begin to see arthritic formations and adhesions that actually snowball into further problems and potential interference with the normal communication of the brain and nervous system to and from the various body systems, anatomy, and physiology. Subluxations, left untreated over months, years, and decades slowly begin to contribute to chronic health conditions and disease, as organs and glands become dysfunctional due to loss of normal nervous system communication.
The same concept of a subluxation can occur in any joint throughout the body. Additionally, tight and inflamed muscles can contribute to interference of nervous system communication through what’s termed peripheral nerve entrapment or peripheral neuropathy. A chiropractor is a physician who is specially trained to diagnose and treat spinal and other joint subluxations through what’s typically referred to as chiropractic adjustments or manipulations, as well as soft tissue (muscle and fascia) techniques to remove nervous system interference and restore bio-mechanical and physiological function.
